Cities of Service Award Goes to Richmond

Richmond has been awarded on of 10 Cities of Service City Hall AmeriCorps VISTA Love Your Block prizes. The award was created to empower local governments to connect with low-income communities and help them revitalize their neighborhoods. Richmond is one of 10 cities which will receive $25,000 to be used for mini-grants and resources to support the efforts of citizen groups and local nonprofits to prevent or eliminate property blight. Two AmeriCorps VISTA members will serve in the city hall of each winning city to build capacity and raise awareness.

This year's competition was specifically targeted to legacy cities — older, industrial cities that have faced substantial population loss in recent years. The winning cities were selected based on potential for impact and clarity of vision for their proposed projects. Other winning cities included Buffalo, NY; Hartford, CT; Gary, IN; Hamilton, OH; Huntington, WV; Lancaster, PA; Milwaukee, WI; Newark, NJ; and South Bend, IN.

Congrats Richmond!
