AmeriCorps State Programs in Virginia
AmeriCorps State programs are managed in partnership with the Virginia Service Commission. Eligible organizations, including faith-based and community organizations, higher education institutions, and public agencies, receive grant awards to support their AmeriCorps programs and members in meeting critical community needs. AmeriCorps programs recruit, train, and place their AmeriCorps members in direct service roles, like tutoring, teaching financial literacy classes, protecting at-risk ecosystems, among many other roles.

AmeriCorps members provide a critical link across three main aspects of a child's daily experience (school, afterschool, home/community) to improve academic performance of 80 3rd-5th grade students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in Arlington.
AmeriCorps members tutor at risk students in reading and/or math in Pre-K through 8th grade in 9 schools in Carroll and Smyth County Public Schools. Members also participate in community service projects to support students and families.
AmeriCorps members support adolescent and adult literacy efforts and improve STEM content knowledge by providing direct service in Halifax, Pittsylvania, and Henry counties; and the cities of Martinsville and Danville. Members serve in three program areas: tutoring at eight middle schools, afterschool informal learning and tutoring at a minimum of 12 locations, and summer bridge programs targeting struggling students.
AmeriCorps members facilitate leadership & college readiness workshops, mentor middle/high school students, and provide meaningful programs for their parents. Edu-Futuro builds partnerships with local school systems and other nonprofits to provide college readiness skills & career preparation to immigrant families.
The Public Health Informatics Training program trains AmeriCorps members in using data to improve care communication, care coordination, triage, and patient support across communities in Northern Virginia. Members will work with health departments, nonprofits, and community-based organizations to improve health and social care connections, as well as earn certifications and training to support them in future public health careers.
AmeriCorps members at IRC provide employment training and placement support, youth development, health navigation and wellness services to refugees, Special Immigrant Visa holders, and asylees in the cities of Charlottesville and Richmond; and the counties of Albemarle, Henrico, and Chesterfield. Members also support local nonprofit organizations in capacity building to increase services and support for refugees.
AmeriCorps members provide low-income kindergarten through third grade students with daily, targeted early literacy intervention through the Virginia Reading Corps Program in elementary schools in Richmond, Petersburg, Hampton, Hopewell, Henrico, and Newport News.
Moving Forward NOVA, an AmeriCorps program run by CASA in Prince William and Fairfax Counties, engages AmeriCorps members to provide financial literacy education, citizenship support, legal support, and youth education to community members.
The City of Richmond's RHOPE program places AmeriCorps members within city government and with nonprofit partners to support Richmonders impacted by the opioid epidemic through prevention and recovery services, facilitate workforce development services for those disproportionately affected by COVID-19, and collaborate with partners to improve public green spaces.
The Virginia College Advising Corps places members as near peer college advisors to low-income, underrepresented, and first-generation students in high schools around Virginia. AmeriCorps members promote a college going culture, support students in college and FAFSA applications, and promote college access for all students.
The Virginia Service and Conservation Corps engages individuals as AmeriCorps members to protect and enhance environmental resources within Virginia State Parks. VSCC AmeriCorps members cut/maintain trails, treat invasive plants, and facilitate interpretive programs in parks across the state.
